WELCOME TO AUSTRALIA'S ORIGINAL COLOURED MINIATURE BABYDOLL SHEEP PROGRAM
Welcome to TANJAR Coloured Miniature Babydolls
Welcome to the home of TANJAR Coloured Miniature Babydolls—Australia's pioneering and most established coloured Miniature Babydoll Southdown breeding program.
When our coloured breeding journey began in 2010, the Australian Babydoll population consisted exclusively of white purebred sheep. There was no recognized pathway to produce a purebred coloured Babydoll. Rather than accept that limitation, we committed to a long-term breeding program built on patience, science, meticulous record-keeping, and uncompromising selection for true Babydoll type.
After a decade of structured appendix breeding, that vision became reality in 2020 with the registration of Tanjar Buckeye—Australia's first registered and papered purebred coloured Babydoll Southdown.
That achievement marked the beginning of a new chapter for the breed in Australia.
Today, TANJAR continues to lead the development of coloured Miniature Babydoll Sheep through carefully planned breeding programs that place breed type before colour. Every generation is selected for the characteristics that define the Babydoll Southdown—correct conformation, compact stature, sound structure, excellent temperament and quality fleece—with colour remaining an enhancement rather than the primary objective.
This website has been created to showcase the history, genetics and ongoing development of coloured Babydoll Sheep in Australia. Here you'll find the story behind the program, information on colour inheritance, our breeding philosophy, the sheep that have shaped our stud, and the generations that continue to build on the foundations established over sixteen years ago.
The coloured Babydoll is not a separate breed—it is a purebred Babydoll Southdown expressing naturally occurring colour genetics. Developing these bloodlines has required years of dedication, careful selection and an unwavering commitment to preserving the qualities that make the Babydoll one of the world's most distinctive miniature sheep breeds.
Whether your interest is in Black Babydolls, TANJAR Ginger Babydolls, rare coloured sheep, or the future of Miniature Babydoll Sheep in Australia, we invite you to explore the journey and discover how more than a decade of careful breeding has helped establish Australia's coloured Babydoll legacy.
We believe the Babydoll Southdown is one of the world's most attractive miniature sheep breeds, valued for its compact size, gentle temperament and traditional breed character.

Our Vision for the Future at TANJAR Coloured Babydolls,
Our breeding program extends beyond simply producing coloured sheep. Our long-term vision is to develop and refine a consistent line of miniature coloured Babydolls that combine authentic Babydoll type, excellent temperament, structural soundness and naturally coloured fleece within a compact, balanced frame.
Reducing mature height is not achieved in a single generation. It is a gradual process requiring careful selection over many years, with every breeding decision made to preserve the defining characteristics of the Babydoll while progressively reinforcing a smaller, more consistent phenotype.
Our breeding philosophy has always been type first, colour second, and size refined through selection. We believe these three traits must work together, never in competition with one another. Colour alone does not define a quality Babydoll, nor does size if it comes at the expense of sound conformation or breed character.
Through disciplined selection, accurate pedigree records and a commitment to continual improvement, TANJAR is working towards producing coloured Babydolls that remain unmistakably Babydolls in every respect while representing the future of the miniature phenotype in Australia.
Every generation moves us one step closer to that goal.
